Seeking the Greatest Gift

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:10-11 (NKJV)

The moment Thanksgiving ends, Christmas cheer bursts forth! Sparkly lights, manger scenes, and warm mugs of cocoa by the fire all add to the wonder of the season. It’s reminiscent of the excitement the wise men experienced as they journeyed to Bethlehem following the star, minds filled with awe, hearts stirred with anticipation. What makes it even more remarkable is that they traveled roughly 800 miles to see the baby Jesus.

The wise men knew the impact this Child would have on the world, and they sought him until they found him. And what did they do when they finally found Him?

They fell down and worshiped Him.

As we enter this Christmas season, knowing Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection, we have every reason to rejoice with the same exceedingly great joy. Jesus is and always will be the greatest gift ever given. May we be intentional about seeking Him, worshiping at His feet, and offering all we have to honor Him.

If you find yourself struggling in this area, do not be discouraged. There are countless Scriptures to meditate on! You might explore the names of God, focusing on one descriptor each day, or read a chapter of Luke daily to see the full picture of God’s marvelous work and character.

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV) reminds us of the reason for the season:
“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Lord,
Thank You for the gift of Your Son, our Savior and King. This Christmas, awaken our hearts with joy and wonder as we seek You, worship You, and offer our lives in honor of Your greatness. Let us remember that Jesus is the greatest gift of all. May our hearts overflow with gratitude, love, and peace this season.
Amen.
